3 Magic Words: A conversation with film director Michael Perlin

Michael Perlin is a young director and part of a new emerging genre of directors creating movies with a spiritual message. Making those kinds of films is challenging as the money to fund them is not readily available.  Many of them are self-produced, driven by the passion of the directors to share the messages with the mainstream. Perlin’s inspiration for his film 3 Magic Words came from the book Three Magic Words: The Key to Power, Peace, and Plenty written by Uell Stanley Andersen in 1954. He produced the film without funding and very little experience. He taught himself graphics, special effects and post production. Production took four years. The movie was shot on a green screen in his apartment in Los Angeles where he conducted one hour interviews with all the participants in the film. Many of them inspired his spiritual journey as a teenager. Powerful messages of best-selling authors Neale Donald Walsch, Gary Renard, Debbie Ford, Dolores Cannon and others are supported by spiritual concepts from eastern mysticism to western new-age thought.
Throughout the film quotes by philosophers and spiritual leaders including Ernest Holmes, Gandhi, Buddha, Jesus, John Lennon, Plato, Sai Baba, Einstein, Osho, Swami Muktananda, Sri Ramana Maharshi, and others are featured on the screen. The movie builds suspension to lead the viewer to the unveiling of the “three magic words” at the very end. During the film, Perlin maintains an unbiased, sometimes humorous tone while interviewing people from all walks of life, professions and spiritual denominations. He catches people in the street off guard with a camera and microphone and asks them profound questions like “Who are you”? He is very cautious of not turning the movie into a boring documentary as he weaves beautiful graphics, contrasting color with black and white images, and music into a mesmerizing story. Perlin shares, “Even if you are not a metaphysical buff or ‘spiritual seeker,’ just changing your perception of the world and seeing people as an expression of yourself can already begin a shift into the new consciousness, a dimension of love and unity without separation.”

3 Magic Words was picked up by Warner Brothers and is now being introduced internationally to Brazil, Hong Kong and South America. Perlin’s future plans are to produce metaphysical dramas inspired by the science fiction he grew up with such as Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.
